WHAT
IS GODS NAME. by Apostle Dr. Chukwuemeka George.
The importance
of name is as old as the history of man, from the accounts of Gen. Chapter 2:19
we can observe that one of the foremost instructions GOD handed down to Adam
was to name every creation as he pleases. Name could speak or reflect on
circumstances, situations, kind, tribe, beliefs, size and scope of a nation.
Particularly in the African setting and beyond names are reflective of who what
and where a person or group of persons represents. Whenever a name is mentioned
value is added. The maker of the entire universe and content could not have
possibly been in existence without a name approved for HIMSELF and by HIMSELF.
The bible tells us in the book of exodus Chapter 15:3 that GODS name is
JEHOVAH[ I AM THAT I AM] [LORD] which literally means HE that makes things to
happen, MAN OF WAR and by all standards the best of the bests in all things. If
we take our earthly fathers into perspective herein it will become clearer for
us to draw closer to the fact that officially names can be side lined for
convenience sake and not necessarily on grounds of isolations e.g.:- Children on account of cultures\ tradition
values refer to their fathers as papa ,Dad, Daddy Papi , Papilo, Nnaa, etc. This does not mean that such Fathers has
not got a name attached with. Knowing some body’s real name suggests a closer
relationship and in turn could stimulate an all-round attitude of positive
response, in the same vain GODS desire as would be is that HIS very own may
know HIM by the name HE Choose for HIMSELF. World over HE is circumstancely and
situation ‘ally addressed with and by many names, at times or even most times
HE gets instant name derivable from the concerned situational experience. In the times of the Bible many
Names were associated with situational circumstances e.g. When MOSES had his
first child he gave him a name that reflected his situation and circumstance. And Moses was content to dwell
with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter. And she bare a son, and he called his name Gresham;
for he said, I have been a sojourner in a foreign land. Exo. Chapt. 2:21, 22,
we also leant of Jabez who’s circumstances of birth reflected or influenced the
name given to him by his parents ,even
in this contemporary time, we still allude to the fact that names speaks
the language of time ,circumstance or situation. Names are not mere formalities as maybe
thought of in some qtrs., it is compelling to the extent that destiny as well
as way of life of the bearers might be affected both in line and in linkage. Arguably
no one could claim having a good knowledge or understanding of what so ever
without first identifying same with or by name. In the same manner, the
knowledge of knowing GOD begins with knowing HIS name and what HIS name stands
for, for instance I am an indegine and citizen of Okolochi, an autonomous
community of about one million people located in the north east wing of owerri township
and part of the Ten kilometer square radius geographical mapping of Owerri as
the Capital of IMO STATE.
According to history the name Okolochi is derived from the names of the
foremost father and son of the town, namely Ochi and Okolo. Whereas Ochi begat
Okolo it became as given unto the son to bore his father’s name as a mark of
distinction and identification ,there after Okolo the son of ochi begat Iwuala,
Echekwuru ,Oyoko,Chieze,Ohamara, and moche
and the expansion continues and continued but something as important as
the name came up which is character personification and preservation. Okolo and his father Ochi had reasoned and
thought over and over how they could document or preserve their personality/
threat for the knowledge and understanding of their generations to come even in
the face of total lack or inadequate storage facilities like motion and still
image converters. This idea gave rise to the choice of picking any animal or
reptile likened to their character content or behavioral tendencies and
dwelling amongst them and most likely not easily extent over time and two types
of Snakes were chosen namely EKE i.e. Python
and VIPER ie ERU, the reason being for the known fact that snakes has
been proven over time to be one of the longest living creatures in history.
While EKE represented the character personification of the father, Eru
represented the youthful tendencies of the son. As a result of this, every okolochi
indigene revered EKE and considers any or group of persons who kills them as
enemy of the entire kingdom. The appearance of ERU at any particular point in
time may be considered an abrasion, a sign of a strong man passing on or strong
thing to happen or that had taken place. On
the other hand the appearance of EKE in any of the family members of Okolochi
dynasty’s home or in strategic places like market places, multi-purpose houses etc
calls for spiritual enquiry as it is seen
and perceived as the father having some things to say for or against at
that material time, however the Christians community considers this value and
practice as idol worship and wherein the
custodians as of today lacked in-depth knowledge and story line of what the
practice is all about, had given more sure support to the opposite augment. In
other words OCHI while alive coded his personality profile into python the king
of the bush and he was a famer and while his son who took after him coded hiss’s
into THE VIPPER because of his warrior like instinct for he was a great hunter
and a warrior who was feared and respected by his neighbors. So getting to know ochi and his son okolo is
simply watching and studying these two specie of reptiles closely in a confine,
and discover or have some reasonable in-depth knowledge about the way of lives of
these great patriots in Character, in values, Strength and weakness.
Incidentally this all important aspect of knowledge remained untapped and the
people continued to develop in error. This analogy explains the importance of
understanding a person, thing or place by their names as chosen and approved. “And
the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind,
and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind:
and God saw that it was good .Gen 1:12 (KJV)”. JEHOVER as the name implied makes things
to happen, HE causes to be, not to be, HE kills, destroys, as well as preserve,
protects, create and recreate and nobody or bodies or person, things in the
high or lower places can challenge HIM. Deut. 32:39 See now that I, even
I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound,
and I heal: neither is there any that
can deliver out of my hand. If the generations of OCHI and his son OKOLO knew
and did understood the intent of their parents am sure they would have adopted
a more responsible approach to the issues of snake adoration/worshipping and
others, at the same time worshippers of the Living GOD will continue to
misunderstand, mispresent, and misinterpret JEHOVAH on the singler account of
ignorant of who HE truly is, and what HE truly stands for. For the asking,
whatever name we have chosen to bear, can we as generation face GOD with it!?.
